Amongst the masses of Internet word-ery concerning the music fraternity there is plenty of hyperbole surrounding what is going to be "THE THING OF THE YEAR", who are the next " GREAT ACT " or what tunes make people fell "LIKE, AWESOME YEH!"
Much of it is perhaps a reaction to the ever growing consensus that the audio industry is a bloated, purpose fed, farm turkey that unfortunately woke this morning to find that Christmas is fast approaching (and it is, isn't it!) or put another way, record labels are a goner, thus ending the hopes, dreams and pub circuit sized, lonely guitar plucking aspirations of, well, just about every middle-class "Cheenager" (a child who is seemingly gaining the angst of a teenager whilst remaining firmly lodged in a cocoon of prepubescent naivety) who ever bought a Coldplay record. Well if EMI can't even sell Robbie WillyPuns to the masses what chance is there for the up and coming talent?
And you can see why this would be believable with physical record sales falling and the emergence of digital formats doing little to offset any deficit.
Buuuuut music fans haven't taken this sort of doom making lying down. No, they are a positive, life is like a chart ineligible 7" single, packed with free poster and 3 extra b-sides, kind of bunch and they have decided that the most effective way to counteract all this unpleasant needle gazing is to make like "The Clash" and do it themselves!
If Polybore aren't going to back their new favourite 3 piece noisecore act (and lets face it who would want them to, they've bodged enough careers already!) then giant Marshall amp stacks!!! why not start a Blog, Web page or Facebook account and become a managerial Svengali from the comfort of your very own latte laden bedroom. Hell, if you're brave enough to put your money where your ears are you can even donate dosh to acts that choose to use sites like Pledge music (http://www.pledgemusic.com/) and get an exclusive gift in return knowing you've done your good deed for the day.
This surge of dot com activity has led to a glut of bands riding the crest of the Blog support and fan pledge wave allowing them to penetrate the thickening middle of the road mainstream bubble. There is a flip side to all this beavering, heart felt giving though that was perhaps unanticipated by the well meaning individuals involved...
It's name is LOVE LETHARGY! (Dun-dun-daaaaaaah!)
In very much the same way that the more a friend talks up their best bud, who is, like THE funniest humanoid ever to down Jack 'n' Black whilst espousing unbelievable anecdotes about Michael Ball's coke habit, the more it becomes apparent that this douchebag must never be allowed to enter a room that contains the same air that the rest of society breaths. And so it is true that the more fans post videos, MP3s, streams or "like" a page the harder it is to gain any perspective on what content is truly worthy of a follow up and what should probably, be left to the wayside, because there isn't enough time in the life of our solar system to sift through it all.
This means that in many cases people just ignore the aural humping and stick with what has already been deemed over the years to be greater than the second coming of the Stone Roses. Sure every now and again certain acts defy all the odds and unite followers across the board but they rarely need an uber gush fest, more merely a concise thumbs up or maybe a little "listen and you'll see" nudge in the right direction. By and large though the majority of what is being offered up will never go any further than the very web page that it is typed on.
And So... to the very nature of what "...Don't Believe In Beatles" is trying to achieve. Well, look at the Blog name, many would look upon it as heresy, unfathomable in fact but in essence what this avenue is opening up is a place where honest comment can be made without a feeling that if your not fawning over, a latest release for example, your not a REAL fan or music lover.
Lets cut the B.S. and make a redress!
There is no need to qualify your statement that Animal Collective suuuuuck with Oh, but they've moved into such brave territory since their first release. NO!
If that's your opinion then you are openly encouraged to expand on it here, be confident. The view may not be commonly held but who's here to just put up and shut up when there is discussion to be had instead.
Here at "...Don't Believe In Beatles" you can find articles, accounts and hypothesis that take an unclouded look at what's about and in turn offers the opportunity for every reader to do the same.
